9780192621405: Oxford Textbook of Medicine (3 Volume Set)

The Oxford Textbook of Medicine is a comprehensive text which covers the practice of internal medicine and its subspecialties. It gives specialty physicians an authoritative source to consult in day-to-day practice and when their patients have disorders which relate to other specialties. This new edition has been extensively revised and large sections have been rewritten by new authors. In the introductory sections there are new chapters on ethics and the assessment of medical care. There are completely new sections on cancer, medicine and the law, and the eye in general medical diseases. The introductory section on the scientific basis of medicine has been rewritten and expanded to include an account of the role of cell biology in clinical practice. These changes reflect the increasing role of the basic sciences in medicine, current concerns about ethical and legal issues, and the recent advances in methods for the dissemination of medical knowledge and for the assessment of clinical trials. The outstanding section on medical disorders in pregnancy has been substantially revised and expanded. Because the Oxford Textbook of Medicine presents a global perspective on disease, there is particular emphasis on infectious diseases.

Review:

In its short existence the Oxford Textbook of Medicine has come to occupy prime position among general textbooks of medicine. It gets better and better. This third edition covers an even more extensive range of topics than before, each dealt with in depth by experts at the forefront of their
fields. All that the average physician needs to know is to be found in its 5000 odd pages; it is no longer necessary to have a separate textbook for each specialty. As in previous editions, the writing is always clear, the presentations concise and readable, the information detailed and up-to-date -
a tribute to the excellence of editorial control. On their own, these sections should be obligatory reading for all medical students but the textbook as a whole will prove as valuable to them as to all physicians. It is indeed a triumphant exposition of modern medical science and practice. Sir
Raymond Hoffenberg, formerly President of the Royal College of Physicians (UK)

"... every health care provider should have this set readily available ... these volumes would be used frequently, not only for clinical reference, but also for interest's sake." Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association (vol.40, no.2, 1996)

`it is a truly comprehensive and readable general medical textbook ... this book reads like an authoritative text .,.. it has been cleverly edited so that both the style and the quality of the chapters are consistent ... Two of the most remarkable features of this book are its consistent
clarity and comprehensive nature. This textbook has for some time now been widely regarded as something of a gold standard amongst general medical textbooks. In my opinion, this reputation is well deserved, and I would go further by saying it would be hard to find a source that is more concise yet
comprehensive.'
Anne Rosser, MRC Clinician Scientist, Molecular Medicine Today, October 1996

`every health provider should have this set readily available - because I believe these volumes would be used frequently, not only for clinical reference but also for interest's sake ... its scope is not only broad, it is also holistic ... this Textbook is user-friendly. References - as
uptodate as possible - are listed at the end of each chapter.'
Igor Steiman, Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, vol. 40, no. 2, 1996

`it is a truly comprehensive and readable general medical textbook ... this book reads like an authoritative text ... However, despite its multi-author nature, it has been cleverly edited so that both the style and the quality of the chapters are consistent. Two of the most remarkable features
of this book are its consistent clarity and comprehensive nature, as exemplified by the neurology section. There is much here that is of interest to neurologists in training, as well as being accessible to those not so well versed in the field. This textbook has for some time now been widely
regarded as something of a gold standard amongst general medical textbooks. In my opinion, this reputation is well deserved, and I would go further by saying it would be hard to find a source that is more concise yet comprehensive.'
Anne Rossser, Molecular Medicine Today, October 1996

`this superb compilation remains an authoritative work of reference on internal medicine and a useful 'way' to the literature'
Alan E.H. Emery, European Neuromuscular Centre, The Netherlands, Neuromuscular Disorders 7 (1997)

`welcomed third edition ... A general textbook of medicine is still essential ... it is essential that physicians caring for the elderly of course purchase the current volumes for their Departments so that they are available for constant reference.'
Gerontology, Vol. 43, No. 5 1997
