Schneidau's concern is with the way in which Modernism, named for its avant-garde propaganda, reveals itself to be dominated by a keen awareness, usually joyous, of the possibilities of the past recurring in the present. He argues that this idea represents a significant nexus in Modernism, an illuminating connection that explains some otherwise puzzling relationships.

'Briefly: Publish it!... The organisation is cunning. Schneidau makes his constitutive points via Ulysses, which is widely known. He then springs two surprises: Hardy and Forster as precursors whom the Modernists found, for different reasons, congenial. That's followed by a chapter on The Secret Agent as Nightmare: not only the best pages on that novel I've read, but an illuminating stage in the book's overall argument.'Hugh Kenner, John Hopkins University

Cloth with dustjacket. Condizione: Gut. 279 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). -- Slightly scuffed dustjacket but still a very good and clean exemplar. -- Studying the most paradoxical aspect of modernism, Waking Giants is an exploration of modernism's obsession with the past. -- Eliot wrote that the artist must be conscious "not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence." This creed permeated the movement named for its avant-garde propaganda: modernists believed that the energies of the past could be resurrected in modern works, and that they could be the very force that makes those works modern. Schneidau shows how this urge of Pound and others to "make it new" stemmed from seeing the past as a source of renewal. -- To illuminate this desire on the part of modernists, Schneidau focuses on separate texts that incorporate these concepts: Joyce's Ulysses, Hardy's poems, Forster's Howards End, Conrad's Secret Agent, Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, and finally, Pound's Cantos. In his discussions, many little-noticed connections are scrutinized, breaking down the compartmentalization of English versus American literature: Hardy with Pound, Forster with Fitzgerald, Joyce and Lawrence with Anderson. Shedding fresh light on a major anomaly in modernist thought, Waking Giants will appeal to students of modern literature. ISBN 9780195068627 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 592.
