One day at the park, Dad warns Thomas not to put his head through the railings. "Like this?" asks Thomas. "No," says Dad, "not like that, like this."
As people walk by and see Dad's head stuck fast, they all have an idea to free him. First, along comes an old lady. Then, two men with their dogs. Followed by three park keepers; four people jogging; five boys on bikes; six mothers with their babies; seven girls jumping rope.... Still more people arrive. "Not like that, like this," they all say. Can you guess who finally rescues Dad?
Every child will chuckle over Dad's plight in this delightfully original counting book, with its simple funny story by Tony Bradman and bright appealing illustrations by Joanna Burroughes.

PreSchool-K-- A peaceful walk to the park results in an amusing predicament for young Thomas and his father in this humorous picture book. Dad warns Thomas not to put his head through the iron bars of the fence. "What, like this?" asks Thomas. "Not like that, like this," says Dad, and promptly finds his head stuck fast. Passersby, in groupings from one to nine, stop to help, with nonsensical suggestions. During each incident the refrain is repeated: "Not like that, like this! " Then ten firemen save the day by bending back the bars and freeing Dad. "How did it happen?" the chief wants to know. "Not like that, like this! " says Thomas, as he naturally gets his own head stuck. This circular story, with its catchy repetitive refrain and soft watercolor drawings, is gently comical rather than uproarious. The illustrations have a static quality, but they are detailed and peopled with interesting street characters. The succinct text and open invitation to participation make this a good read-aloud choice. --Gail C. Ross, Baltimore County Public Library
