Levine was Margaret Byrne Professor of History Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, and Professor of History and Cultural Studies at George Mason University in Virginia. A former MacArthur fellow and a Past President of the Organization of American Historians, he was the author of a number of books, among them The Unpredictable Past: Explorations in American Cultural History, Highbrow/Lowbrow, and The People & the President: America's Extraordinary Conversation with FDR
