The writer is an anti-poverty campaigner, whose work experience at Bridge House in Kingston, Ontario (circa 1983), focused her thinking and resulted in these 293 pages. TEXT proper ends at page 190 - the remainder is Appendix, Notes, Biblio, and INDEX. Charts of statistical data and a few b/w photos assist text. The premise of the book is to look at the self-censorship induced by some social policies such as Ontario Mother's Allowance and its real role in the economy of the poor.
