Of the three Presidencies of British India, Madras has received the least attention by economic historians; works on its industrial development are even more scarce. Written on the premise that an understanding of why Madras was industrially backward in comparison to Bombay and Bengal would provide a more nuanced account of the dynamics of the Indian economy under colonial rule, the author argues that Madras suffers because of its inability to make an effective transition to industrialization.
