Betel chewing is one of the most ancient and widespread traditions of the peoples of South-East Asia, and encompasses an estimated one-tenth of the world's population. Although the ingredients of the betel quid are indigenous, the habit was probably introduced to the region by traders and merchants from India some 2,000 years ago.
