Who was Mackinder? This book aims to give the ideas and achievements of this many-faceted man the recognition they deserve. The aspect of applied geography that brought him fame was his geopolitical concept of the Heartland, the great interior of the land hemisphere or World Island, which would allow its Eurasian tenants to challange sea power located in the outer islands, peninsulas and coastlands. His ideas have contributed powerfully to twentieth-century history.
