9780198521334: Working Memory (Oxford Psychology Series)

This ground-breaking text, now in a paperback edition, describes a new model for temporary memory--the brief, nonpermanent storage of information necessary for learning, reasoning, and comprehension. Dr. Baddeley outlines the concept of working memory, which entails a central executive controller and a number of "slave" systems. Two of these systems are justified in terms of experimental results from both normal and brain damaged subjects. The concept of working memory is applied to the development of children's reading skills, and the cognitive deficits observed in patients suffering from frontal lobe damage are considered. Cognitive psychologists and advanced students in the field will welcome the paperback version of this acclaimed work.

Review:

'The book is a remarkable achievement...Baddeley has been able to provide a wide-ranging theoretical framework.' British Journal of Psychology

'Anyone interested in human learning and memory from a psychological viewpoint will find this book full of pertinent and fascinating information.' Trends in Neurosciences

'a solid demonstration that experimental rigour and ingenuity, coupled with a broad conceptual approach and sheer persistence, can result in something that is as rare as it is invaluable: genuinely cumulative progress. Cognitive psychology owes Dr Baddeley a debt of gratitude.' Nature

'An extremely important book...the book is indeed timely. It is the clearest and best-documented statement to date...balance, detachment, indefatigable patience, a genial and uncompetitive view of other people's ideas and contributions, a striving towards total honesty and clarity as the
issues allow.' Bulletin

'Readers wanting to keep abreast of developments in memory will find this a valuable book.' Contemporary Psychology

'Beautifully produced...This handsome volume will be essential reading for many students, teachers, and practitioners of ergonomics. It contains a vast fund of research findings, and analysis thereof...The elegance of most of the writing makes reading the book a joy. But the insight into
memory...is probably the greatest value of this book...Probably the definitive monograph on working memory.' Ergonomics

'eminently readable. The book's contribution is in providing a single source summary and evaluation of one of the major advances in the last decade of research in British cognitive psychology. The book Working Memory attests to this remarkable achievement.' Applied Cognitive
Psychology
