9780199535569: Pride and Prejudice

'This perfect indifference, and your pointed dislike, make it so delightfully absurd!'

Pride and Prejudice has delighted generations of readers with its unforgettable cast of characters, carefully choreographed plot, and a hugely entertaining view of the world and its absurdities. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and menide down. Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity, as misconceptions and hasty judgements lead to heartache and scandal, but eventually to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. In this supremely satisfying story, Jane Austen balances comedy with seriousness, and witty observation with profound insight. If Elizabeth Bennet returns again and again to her letter from Mr Darcy, readers of the novel are drawn even more irresistibly by its captivating wisdom.

Descrizione libro Oxford University Press, 2008. Softcover. Condizione libro: New. 13 x 19 cm. Pride And Prejudice is the story of Elizabeth Bennet, who was born into a family of five daughters. It depicts her life through various stages such as adolescence, marriage, and beyond, reflecting the lives of people in England and the state of the English society of the nineteenth century. The book is spread over 61 chapters and its title is said to have been inspired by the 1782 novel Cecilia, which features the term in one of its passages. It has managed to retain the interest of the British literary circle for the impact it has made on several generations. Two movies have been made based on this novel. The themes explored include marriage, class, money, and learning. The style of writing is narrative and is in the third person. In essence, this classic is a social comedy bordering on satire. The lead character, Elizabeth Bennet, is witty, charming, lively, and most of all, strong. The interaction between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, the male lead of the story, is one of the highlights of the book. Their volatile relationship takes the center stage in the storyline. Pride and Prejudice has sold as many as 20 million copies. On the occasion of its 200th anniversary in 2013, two celebratory monographs namely Celebrating Pride And Prejudice: 200 Years Of Jane Austen?s Masterpiece and Celebrating Pride And Prejudice: 200 Years Of Jane Austen?s Darling Child were released. Printed Pages: 377. Codice libro della libreria 101405
