9780199558292: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass (Oxford World's Classics)

The "Alice" books are two of the most translated, most quoted, and best-known books in the world. Alice's encounters with the White Rabbit, the Cheshire-Cat, the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, and many other extraordinary characters have made them beloved by children. Yet they also appeal to adults fascinated by the many layers of satire, allusion, and symbolism about Victorian culture and politics.

This new edition explores the phenomenal range of reference and the paradoxical appeal of two of the most inventive books in world literature. The volume has been deftly edited by one of the foremost children's literature experts, Peter Hunt, and it features the original, much-loved illustrations by Sir John Tenniel, newly scanned and reset for enhanced sharpness and clarity. Extensive explanatory notes give information on Carroll's political, social, intellectual, and personal allusions and sources. The book provides an extensive bibliography and a chronology of Carroll's life and times, and it also includes a deleted episode called "The Wasp in a Wig."

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Review:

"And what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?"

Taking to heart his charming, insatiably curious heroine's words, Lewis Carroll worked many long hours (days, months...) with illustrator Sir John Tenniel to create the most perfect pictures imaginable for what were to become instant classics: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. When thinking about Alice and her dreamy surrealistic adventures down the rabbit hole and behind the looking-glass, who can help picturing the golden-haired girl in her lilac dress and striped stockings, gazing up at the Cheshire Cat or arguing with Tweedledum and Tweedledee? Tenniel's drawings remained black and white for over 40 years until 1911, when eight prints in each book were hand colored. Now, for the first time, every remaining illustration has been colored, making these the first editions to feature all of the original art in full color. Traditionalists need not worry: colorist Diz Wallis colored proofs taken from Tenniel's carefully preserved woodblocks, remaining faithful to his original drawings. The beautiful tones of these new hardcover editions look as natural as can be; they could just as easily be from the 19th century. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

From the Publisher:

In 1862 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a shy Oxford mathematician with a stammer, created a story about a little girl tumbling down a rabbit hole. Thus began the immortal adventures of Alice, perhaps the most popular heroine in English literature. Countless scholars have tried to define the charm of the Alice books--with those wonderfully eccentric characters the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Cheshire Cat, Mock Turtle, the Mad Hatter et al.--by proclaiming that they really comprise a satire on language, a political allegory, a parody of Victorian children's literature, even a reflection of contemporary ecclesiastical history. Perhaps, as Dodgson might have said, Alice is no more than a dream, a fairy tale about a trials and tribulations of growing up--or down, or all turned round--as seen through the expert eyes of a child.

Descrizione libro Oxford University Press, United Kingdom, 2009. Paperback. Condizione libro: New. Sir John Tenniel (illustratore). new edition.. Language: English . Brand New Book. But I don t want to go among mad people, Alice remarked. Oh, you can t help that, said the Cat. We re all mad here. The Alice books are two of the most translated, most quoted, and best-known books in the world, but what exactly are they? Apparently delightful, innocent fantasies for children, they are also complex textures of mathematical, linguistic, and philosophical jokes. Alice s encounters with the White Rabbit, the Cheshire-Cat, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and many other extraordinary characters have made them masterpieces of carefree nonsense, yet they also appeal to adults on a quite different level. Layers of satire, allusion, and symbolism about Victorian culture and politics, as well as revelations about the intricate subconscious problems of their author, add to their fascination and make them impossible to classify. This new edition explores the phenomenal range of reference, and the paradoxical appeal of two of the most inventive books in world literature. It also includes an episode removed by Carroll from the proofs of Through the Looking-Glass, called The Wasp in a Wig .
