International Criminal Procedure: Principles and Rules is a comprehensive study of international criminal proceedings written by over forty leading experts in the field. The book offers a systematic overview and detailed comparison of the standards governing the conduct of proceedings in all major international and internationalized criminal courts from the Nuremberg and Tokyo Tribunals to the recently established Cambodian Extraordinary Chambers and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

Based on a major research project, the study covers all procedural phases from the initiation of investigation to the appeals process. It pays special attention to the crosscutting themes which shape the contemporary discourse on international criminal justice, including the law of evidence, the defence issues, the procedural role of victims, and negotiated dismissal of international crime cases.

The book not only takes stock of the procedural legacy of the UN ad hoc Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, but also reflects on the future directions of international criminal procedure. Investigating the tribunals' procedural law and practice through the prism of human rights law, domestic legal traditions, and tribunals' special objectives, the expert group puts forth proposals on how the challenges facing international criminal jurisdictions can best be met.

International Criminal Procedure will be an indispensable work for practitioners involved in the adjudication of serious crimes on both national and international level, as well as international law students and academics.

Recensione:
This is undoubtedly a monumental work, so much so that it holds the potential to contribute to the procedural regime of international criminal law in its own right ē given the calibre of its editors and authors, the recommendations made in this work are likely to hold sway with the judiciaries of the ICC and the ad hoc tribunals...this volume represents one of the first concerted and comprehensive surveys of international criminal procedure to be carried out by a collective of leading thinkers in the field. ( Tomas Hamilton, Journal of International Criminal Justice)

The editors have amassed an army of very experienced practitioners and academics and the end result is spectacular. The reader will be able to trace in a jungle of developments all relevant rules, not only from a purely criminal perspective, but also their corresponding human rights angle, with an admirable coverage and commentary ... No doubt, this book will become an indispensable tool for all those involved professionally or academically in the area of international criminal procedure and is already the benchmark for future encyclopaedic works in the field. ( Ilias Bantekas, International Criminal Law Review 13)

Containing a remarkably exhaustive study of the issues surrounding this nascent and specialized field of international law, International Criminal Procedure: Principles and Rules is an essential resource for both the scholar and practitioner of international criminal law. ( LexisNexis Legal Newsroom International Law)

Benefits from several excellent chapters by various well-chosen authors Sluiter et al. is impressive in its ability to implement its methodology in a rigorous and systematic manner. Furthermore, as the editors rightly note, 'the standard layout makes the group's reasoning and findings transparent and verifiable' Sluiter and his co-authors have created a very good and useful work of reference for practitioners and for anyone looking for the law in lesser known international criminal jurisdictions. ( Marko Divac Öberg, Leiden Journal of International Law)
