9780199937820: Atlas of the World

Oxford's Atlas of the World--the only world atlas updated annually, guaranteeing that users will find the most current geographic information--is the most authoritative resource on the market. The Nineteenth Edition includes new census information, dozens of city maps, gorgeous satellite images of Earth, and a geographical glossary, once again offering exceptional value at a reasonable price.

Full of crisp, clear cartography of urban areas and virtually uninhabited landscapes around the globe, the Atlas has maps of cities and regions at carefully selected scales that give a striking view of the Earth's surface. Opening with a newly updated world statistics section and a colorful, instructive 48-page Introduction to World Geography--beautifully illustrated with tables and graphs--this acclaimed resource provides details on such topics as climate, the greenhouse effect, employment and industry, standards of living, agriculture, population and migration, and global conflicts.

As in years past, this edition has been revised to reflect the latest geographic information. The popular satellite image section has been refreshed with stunning new images of different regions and urban areas around the world. A completely updated Gazetteer of Nations provides an invaluable A-Z reference source of concise country profiles, including important historical events and statistics on economies and politics. Recent events in Africa and the Middle East--and their profound consequences--are incorporated into various country profiles.

Providing the finest global coverage available, the Atlas of the World is not only the best-selling volume of its size and price, but also the benchmark by which all other atlases are measured.

Review:

A Look Inside the Atlas of the World [Click Images to Enlarge]

North America: Here is a satellite view of a portion of the North American continent. The the third-largest continent in area, it follows only Asia and Africa in size. It has the fourth largest in population after Asia, Africa, and Europe. The United States, Canada, and Mexico stand as the most populous nations on the continent.

Employment and Industry: This page provides a look at employment and industry statistics for various countries across the globe. Since the 1970s, some former developing countries in eastern Asia achieved rapid economic growth through industrialization. Despite setbacks in the late 1990s, they demonstrated that a developing industrial sector can transform an economy.

Mumbai: Also known as Bombay, Mumbai is the largest and most important commercial city in India, with a population of 21 million people. The growth of cotton weaving and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 cemented its position as India's most important trading port. The city is also the center of the highly successful Hindi movie industry, or "Bollywood," which exports its products around the world.

Warsaw: This image shows two of the world's dynamic cities--Warsaw, Poland, and Washington, D.C. Warsaw, the capital and largest city of Poland, is a major international tourist destination and an important economic hub in Central Europe. It is also known as the "Phoenix City" because it has survived many wars throughout its history. Singapore: Singapore has developed a fast-growing economy based on the trans-shipment of goods between the Far East and the West. As a result, it is one of the world's major ports and much new development, by reclaiming land from the sea, can be seen in the south, colored light brown in this image. The city state is one of the world's wealthiest countries, with a population of over 5 million people. Saudi Arabia: This map provides a look at Saudi Arabia, the largest Arab state in Western Asia by land area, and the second-largest in the Arab world. Thanks to vast oil resources, this country has become one of the wealthiest nations in the region. It has approximately one-fifth of the world's proven oil reserves, and is the largest oil producer and exporter of total petroleum liquids in the world.

From Booklist:

Oxford is to be complemented on producing a new edition of its world atlas every year—the world is always changing, so updates are necessary. Some of those for the nineteenth edition include new motorways in China, a new city map of Dubai, the addition of the Olympic Stadium in London, updates in country-population statistics, and gazetteer information. As long as atlases are used in schools, colleges, and at home, an edition within the last five years is a necessity. With beautiful satellite photos and Philip’s cartography, this is a bargain for any library that needs a new world atlas. --Christine Bulson
