Harold Fletecher was a young zoologist when he joined expeditions to the Antarctic region, in 1929 and 1931, both led by the noted Australian southern polar explorer Sir Douglas Mawson. The expeditions were supported by Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand and known as the BANZ Antarctic Research Expedition. This detailed account of the two expeditions, which encountered all the perils, hardships and challenges of such ventures, when afloat or on the ice, is based on the dairies Fletcher kept, which contain much more informal detail than other, earlier accounts of the two expeditions. It was only when the author re-read his dairies more than 50 years after he compiled them that he considered their publication. In his preface to the book Fletcher said it was ".an attempt to make known the everyday experiences and the more intimate domestic life and feelings of the expedition's 37 members, always in close contact with one another on board the relatively small vessel Discovery. It is a story of a concerted effort in which everyone worked together as a team in a spirit of comradship always more accentuated when conditions became most trying and hazardous." Each of these points, and many more, are graphically recorded in this enlightening account of Antarctic exploration in the 1920s and '30s.The first voyage lasted from October 1929 to April 1930 and the second from November 1930 to March 1931. In the opening pages, the author outlines previous Antarctic explorations and the objectives of the BANZARE expeditions First edition of 1984 from Angus and Robertson. 313 pages, illustrated with 10 double page b/w photos and 9 full page photos, several maps plus e/paper maps. Hardcover. Condizione: USED_VERYGOOD. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG+. Photos, Maps (illustratore). 1st. At the end of the 1920s and the beginning of the1930s the British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition twice visited the southern polar regions. The first sailed from Cape Town in October 1929, arriving in Australia on May 1, 1930. The second voyage left Hobart late November 1930 with the ship used for both expeditions, Discovery, returning there mid-March the following year. Author of this account of the two Antarctic voyages was a young zoologist and his record of the experience of sailing in often uncharted waters, mountainous seas, terrific winds, dangerous ice conditions and extreme cold make a fascinating story, to which is added scientific aspects, such as deep water marine life, cartography and the polar biology, plus interesting observations on the personalities of the ship's complement.i. With a full set of sails to relieve her steam engine the Discovery often moved under sail alone. Both expeditions were led by the famous Australian explorer Douglas Mawson. 313 pages, frontis of author, 18 other photos, 10 being double page, (all photos sepia tone), three maps, one being double page, e/paper maps track chart of Discovery's voyaging. Grey hard covers with white spine titles VG+ with light wear lower edges, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Pictorial DJ VG+ with tiny tear top rear flap fold, not price clipped.
