HE ideas men have formed of God are the most varied imaginable. This is the case not only with writers outside the Bible, but with the inspired writers as well. Here for instance are a few of their statements:--" He is seen;" "He is not seen; He repents;" "He changes not." "He is good and doeth good;" yet "shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it?" Job prays:--"0 that I knew where I might find Him;" S. Paul says:--" He is not far from any one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being." "The pure in heart," we are told, "shall see God;" and yet He is "the King Immortal, invisible whom no man hath seen or can see." He is the infinite and eternal Love; and yet, "our God is a consuming Here is one of the most painful difficulties of the age. Men go to their Bibles to find out what they ought to think about God; and finding conflicting statements like these, they are perplexed, confused, bewildered,--utterly at a loss to tell what their idea of God ought to be. Many go further. While those who profess and call themselves Christians are occupied with questions of minor importance, these busy themselves with the greatest of all. The questions they are continually asking are like these--Is there a God? If there is, what is He like? Is He a Being with whom we can hold communion? These in fact, are the questions of the day. Look for instance at the books and pamphlets which are bought and read with avidity. The questions discussed there, are those which lie at the root of Religion.
