Excerpt: ... THE END OF THE AGE: Vulgarly called, "the End of the World? Matt. Xxiv. And Xxv. It is evening, and it is spring. Jesus is leaving the Temple for the last time. Chapters xxii. and xxiii. were delivered in the Temple. His denunciation of the Jewish teachers had been scathingly severe; but uttered with great pain and tenderness of spirit. His last words in the Temple were: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often I would have gathered thy children together," into security and peace, into the everlasting security and peace. His heart was never tenderer than at that moment. A day or two before, He burst into tears, on approaching the city. How shrilly the pain of His Love rings forth in these words: "I would; but you would not." "Oh that thou hadst known, at least, this thy day! but hid now from thine eyes, are the things which belong to thy peace." "Behold your house is left unto you desolate." He calls it not now "My Father's House;" for having rejected Him, their Temple was in no sense the house of His Father. "Your house" is left to you; but henceforth it is "desolate." Doomed to desolation, is every house, of which He is not the Spirit. Had their souls not been desolated of all heavenly qualities, they could not have rejected Him. Turning from them He said: You will see Me henceforth no more, until you love Me,--until you call Me, "Blessed." Your coldness to Me, is your desolation. "And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down." Vers. 1, 2.
