The correlation coefficient is positive (0.58) and is over eight times the probable error (0.07). This shows conclusively that there is very close relationship between the rainfall and wheat yield in this state. This is shown graphically by figure 5. Wheat Yield and Rainfall in Washington: A similar plan was followed for the state of Washington. As was expected, the average yield and the average rainfall for the whole state bore no relation to each other, the correlation coefficient being-0.20 which is less than twice the probable error. In this state, as in California, the wheat area is practically limited to the region east of the Coastal Mountains. The region is a broad level plateau, but much the same conditions exist as regards rainfall, as are found in the San Joaquin valley. Hence the rainfall for this region only, must be used in any attempt to correlate rainfall and wheat yield for the state. Three counties, Whitman, Lincoln, and Adams, grow a large percentage of the total wheat crop of the state. Furthermore, they are typical of the entire wheat belt of the state, hence the rainfall data from stations located within these counties was calculated. Table 7 shows a comparison of the )l79.59 x 239.12. 207-41.28 + 207 =-0.20 correlation coefficient..674 1 oo20--"± Probable error. 49.44 x 134.2 = 81.4 38.13 + 81.4 = + 0.468 correlation coefficient..674 1 " (Q»47)--= + 0.14 probable error. rainfall thus calculated with the average yield per acre for the entire region. The state has not been a large producer until recently, hence the available s...
