Excerpt: ... ST. NICHOLAS, COLE ABBEY T. NICHOLAS was the patron saint of sailors, and all round our coast tourists will find churches by the sea dedicated to him, generally on the highest ground that can be used. Of 'Cole Abbey' it is impossible to speak with any certainty. 'Golden Abbey' has been proposed as the explanation, but it brings us no nearer. I am strongly of opinion that it is a corruption of 'Cold Harbour,' though that will not settle all questions for us, for there has been much dispute as to the meaning of that. There are near upon a hundred and fifty 'Cold Harbours ' scattered about England, and at least half a dozen explanations have been given, as may be seen by an examination of Notes and Queries, but I finally fall back upon the simple one of Skeat that it meant a harbour of refuge from the cold in exposed roads and streets. There was a Cold Harbour for the sailors by the river near at hand, built by Sir John Poultney, and this, I take it, gave name to the church. It was the first built after the Fire, and cannot be pronounced one of Wren's great successes. Architectural experts hold the concave spire with the balcony on the top to be ungraceful. The interior is rectangular without aisles, and like most of Wren's churches has some beautiful carving. The great chandelier which is shown in our picture is very fine, maintained by some to be the best of its kind in London. As other means of lighting have come in, it is now only used on great festivals. The church has had a signal advantage in its late rector, Henry Cary Shuttleworth, and his successor, C. Napier Kelly. Shuttleworth exerted himself piously for its reverent adornment, and was most successful. At first entry the visitor must be struck with its beauty, and the additions to the decorations...
