EW who have studied. the subject of Popular Games, will be disinclined to agree with the remark of Mr. Robert Chambers (Popular Rhymes of Scotland), that there is a something about them (he speaks particularly of Choral Games, but the observation is equally true of others) 'which it is difficult to reconcile with the idea of their being direct productions of the childish intellect.' Children, in fact, do not invent. They imitate the doings of their elders: and they even keep alive in the strangest manner things practised by their elders in former generations, but long since dropped by them as foolish and idle, if not superstitious customs. The children's games of to-day show us, as in a mirror, the occupations and manner of life of our forefathers. They have had their origin in the festive songs and dances of rustic pagandom, in the early beginnings of masque and drama, in the obscure rites of divination and magic which attended the ancient popular assemblies. ■ For more convenience, I have arranged our collection of Shropshire i games in six groups, on each of which I wish to make a few remarks.
