This leads to a new appreciation of his two masterpieces, The White Devil and The Duchess of Malfi. With chapters on his early plays of London life and on the political implications of his later writings, a coherent shape is given to Webster's dramatic career. Combining biographical facts with her considerable knowledge of theatrical history, Professor Bradbrook has built up a convincing picture of the greatest English tragic dramatist after Shakespeare.
