9780241186619: The Battle of the Atlantic: How the Allies Won the War

A gripping tale that transforms our understanding of the Second World War

The Battle of the Atlantic was - though often overlooked - crucial to victory in the Second World War. If the German U-boats had prevailed, the maritime artery across the Atlantic would have been severed. Mass hunger would have consumed Britain, and the Allied armies would have been prevented from joining in the invasion of Europe. There would have been no D-Day.

Through fascinating contemporary diaries and letters, from the leaders and from the sailors on all sides, Jonathan Dimbleby creates a thrilling narrative that uniquely places the campaign in the context of the entire Second World War. Challenging conventional wisdom on the use of intelligence and on Churchill's bombing campaign, The Battle of the Atlantic tells the epic story of the decisions that led to victory, and the horror and humanity of life on those perilous seas.

Recensione:

Fascinating, thought-provoking and entertaining. Explodes a number of self-serving myths (Andrew Roberts (on 'Destiny in the Desert: The Road to El Alamein'))

Fresh and provocative (Peter Snow (on 'Destiny in the Desert'))

A wonderfully incisive, superbly written history. What Dimbleby has nailed so brilliantly is what so many war historians miss: the big picture (Saul David (on 'Destiny in the Desert'))

Dimbleby expertly weaves dramatic events and the decisions and dilemmas of the great war leaders . . . with real pace, drama and insight (Dr Niall Barr (on 'Destiny in the Desert'))

Superbly paced and expressed (Allan Mallinson (on 'Destiny in the Desert'))

Descrizione libro Penguin UK, 2015. Paperback. Condizione libro: New. The longest campaign of the Second World War.  The most destructive naval campaign in all history.  An epic story that has never been fully told. The Battle of the Atlantic was crucial to the Allied victory in the Second World War. If the U-boats had prevailed, the maritime artery across the Atlantic would have been severed. Britain would have been forced to submit to the Nazis. It would have been impossible to mount the invasion of Europe in June 1944: there would have been no D-Day. When we contemplate the great struggles of 1939-1945, the Blitz, El Alamein, Stalingrad, Arnhem and Berlin invariably come to mind.  Yet without the defeat of the U-boats in the Atlantic, those battles could not have been fought, let alone won.  In the words of Winston Churchill: 'The Battle of the Atlantic was the dominating factor all through the war . . . everything happening elsewhere, on land, at sea, or in the air, depended ultimately on its outcome.' Interweaving the stories of those on both sides who fought at sea with those of their political and military leaders, Jonathan Dimbleby creates a thrilling narrative that uniquely places the campaign in its global context.  Challenging conventional wisdom on the role of Intelligence and on Churchill's bombing campaign, The Battle of the Atlantic tells the story of the decisions that led to victory, and the horror and humanity of life on those perilous seas. It is a gripping tale that transforms our understanding of the Second World War. Paperback. Codice libro della libreria MM-40032544
