Ce roman a une histoire qu'il n'est peut-être pas inutile de conter.
C'était en 1867, aux temps difficiles de mes débuts. Il n'y avait pas chez moi du pain tous les jours. Or, dans un de ces moments de misère noire, le direc teur d'une petite feuille marseillaise le Messager de Provence, était venu me proposer une affaire, une idée à lui, sur laquelle il comptait pour lancer son journal. Il s'agissait d'écrire, sous ce titre les Mys tères de Marseille, un roman dont il devait fournir les éléments historiques, en fouillant lui - même les greffes des tribunaux de Marseille et d'aix, afin d v copier les pleces des grandes affaires locales, qui avaient passionné ces villes depuis cinquante ans. Cette idée de journaliste n'était pas plus sotte qu'une autre, et le malheur a été sans doute qu'il ne fût pas tombé sur un fabricant de feuilletons, ayant le don des vastes machines romanesques.
