Gardens have always been intriguing artistic subjects, mainly because of their mythological and Biblical symbolism. The Dutch had no formal gardens of their own until the late 17th century, and early Netherlandish artists used Italian models, and imagination, to portray them. Thus, unlike the realistic interiors of the same period, most of the garden settings are pure fantasy. The exhibition of paintings, drawings, prints, and rare books for which this is the catalog was not exactly a blockbuster; budget restrictions limited borrowing to the East Coast, and many of the artists are obscure. Nevertheless, the show had substance, focusing more on iconography than artistic merit, and Hellerstedt discusses aspects of Netherlandish art not previously examined in depth.
