Sinossi

Excerpt from The Nonconformist's Memorial, Vol. 1 of 3: Being an Account of the Lives, Sufferings, and Printed Works, of the Two Thousand Ministers Ejected From the Church of England, Chiefly by the Act of Uniformity, Aug. 24, 1666

Their enemies have affected greatly to reduce the number. An anonymous writer, having counted the Name in Dr. Calamy's Index to his first edition, (in which he had inserted those only of whom he had given some account) reports with triumph that the 2600 sufferers, so much cried up, cannot be made more than 696, of whom a fourth part afterwards conformed. See the Dr.'s Answer, in his Pref. To vol. II.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book takes the reader back to a pivotal period in English history: the tumultuous years following the English Civil War and the Restoration of the monarchy. It focuses on the lives and struggles of the Nonconformist ministers, who refused to conform to the Act of Uniformity and were ejected from their parishes in 1662. The author delves into the reasons for their Nonconformity, examining the historical roots of religious dissent in England and highlighting the complex political and theological landscape of the time. The book explores the diverse experiences of these ministers, from the personal sacrifices they made to the challenges they faced in the face of persecution. The author also examines the accusations of illiteracy and irrationality leveled against the Nonconformists, presenting counterarguments and highlighting the intellectual prowess and theological depth of these ministers. Through their individual stories, the book offers a nuanced understanding of the motivations and ideals of Nonconformity, demonstrating its enduring significance in the shaping of religious and social thought. The book provides a valuable insight into the complex social and religious dynamics of 17th-century England, and serves as a testament to the courage and conviction of those who stood up for their beliefs in the face of adversity.
