Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an exploration of the medieval phenomenon of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain, from the early Middle Ages until the turn of the 16th century. The book's focus is on the German pilgrims to Santiago, who became increasingly numerous from the 12th century onwards, when the shrine grew in importance thanks to the Gregorian Reforms and the increasing influence of Cluniac reforms. Pilgrimages from Germany to Santiago de Compostela increased significantly after the 15th century, with the most common form of travel being via the Rhine and the Bay of Biscay. The author analyzes the significance of this practice within the broader context of the medieval Church's efforts to demonstrate its authority and in relation to the close ties between Spain and Germany as manifested by shared political, economic, and religious interests. This book uncovers the religious significance of these pilgrimages and their development into an essential part of medieval German piety, which only waned at the end of the Middle Ages due to the Reformation and the political fragmentation of the Holy Roman Empire.
