But though these considerations appear to render such a work as the present desirable, they would probably not have been sufficient to induce me to encounter the labour and difficulty of writing it, if I had not thought that it would illustrate and promote the genuine objects of the study of Mathematics as part of a University education. I have already endeavoured to define those objects, and to extend our means of attaining them, and I will now make a few further remarks on the subject, with a special reference to the present Treatise.
