On ne trouvera point ici de recherches historiques origi nales; mon but n'est point de redresser des droits de priorité et j'accepte l'histoire de la Mécanique telle qu'on la connaît aujourd'hui. Au début de mon travail, j'avais pris pour guide les admirables historiques que Lagrange a mis en tête des diverses parties de sa Mécanique analytique. Pendant que j'y étais occupé, ont paru la traduction française du livre de M. Mach et les travaux de M. Unhem. J'ai largement profité, à tous les points de vue le lecteur pourra s'en con vaincre), de ces beaux Ouvrages. Les études de M. Dühem ont transformé la question des origines de la Mécanique moderne en faisant mieux connaître les sources profondes d'où elle découle; j'ai naturellement tenu compte de ses dé couvertes.
