The subject is approached by examining two extant poems on the subject, 'Walther und Hildegunt' and 'Walther von der Vogelweide', as well as a prose depiction from 'Die Heidenin'. These texts, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, tell the story of Walther, a young knight, and his quest to find his father, Alpharius. The author argues that these poems are not independent works, but rather poetic treatments of an existing, single narrative tradition. This study positions these poems within the broader medieval literary landscape, examining their connections to the 'Nibelungenlied' and Wolfram von Eschenbach's 'Parzival'. Thematic depth is found in analysis of chivalry, knightly virtue, and the medieval concept of minnesang (courtly love). This book presents exciting new insights into the works and the time period.
