Viele äußerliche Charaktere des Habitus haben sie mit den Bro meliaceen gemeinsam, wie z.b. Die spiralig in Rosetten gestellten Blätter, den rispig verzweigten und mit Hochblättern versehenen Blütenstand, dessen terminale Stellung das Absterben der betreffenden Rosette bedingt. Anklänge an die Sukkulenz finden sich auch bei einigen Bromeliaceae, wie z. B. Die Gattungen Dyckia und Hechtia, und echte End und Randstacheln sind bei den Bromeliaceen nichts Ungewöhnliches. Allerdings sind die Blüten, die Früchte und die Samen der beiden, Agavoideae und Bromeliaceae, recht verschieden und weisen beiden eine andere Stellung, den ersteren unter den Lilii floren, den zweiten unter den Farinosae an.
