Sa racine est cylindrique pivotante bisannuelle, plus ou moins épaisse et charnue, d'une couleur blanche jaune ou rouge, selon les variétés; elle donne naissance à une tige droite, cannelée, glabre ainsi que toute la plante, rameuse haute de 5 à /1 pieds, garnie de feuilles ovales, lisses, un peu succulentes, d'un vert clair; celles qui parlent immé diatement de la racine et celles du bas de la tige étant très grandes, portées sur des pétioles larges et charnus. Ses fleurs sont sessiles réunies trois à quatre ensemble dans les aisselles des feuilles supérieures de la tige et des rameaux Où elles forment de longs épis feuillés. Cette plante est abon damment cultivée dans les jardins et dans les cham ps; elle fleurit en juin juillet et août.
