But although the criticism of the French mathe maticians would appear to be ill founded, it cannot be denied that to those who have no previous familiarity With the subjects treated in the Enumeratio, some explanation and illustration is wanted in order to enable them to arrive at the author's meaning; and it is for this reason, and with a view of supplying the desideratum, that notes to elucidate the text have been added in the present volume.
