Knowledge of Zen Buddhism in the West is largely due to the work of D.T. Suzuki. Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki was born in Japan and educated at the famous monastery at Kamakura. He attained his Zen enlightenment at the age of 27, wrote and taught for 65 years. He wrote over one hundred books in English and Japanese. He taught at Columbia University, New York, and died in 1966.
