Lord Curzon rightly looms large in the history of the Raj, but heretofore the role of his American-born wife has received less attention from students of the British Empire than it deserves. Accordingly, the present collection of letters is a welcome publication, and it will appeal to specialists in a variety of fields. Students of women's history will find the letters both interesting and revealing in the sense that they show real behind-the-scenes influence; imperial historians will be led to the heart of the Raj's inner workings; and biographers will find much grist for their mills here. The editing is solid, with narrative material connecting letters as needed. Recommended for all academic collections. James A. Casada, History Dept., Winthrop Coll., Rock Hill, S.C.
