The Macchiaioli were mid-19th-century painters whose work has some of the color quality and vividness of Impressionist sketches. Broude (American University) has explored the historical contextthe unification of Italyin which this movement, disaffected by Academic art, grew. He examines the work of Guiseppe Abbati, Silvestro Lega, Giovanni Fattori, and Telemaco Signorini, among others, using scenes of middle-class Italian life and landscape for illustration. Many of the artists discussed will be unfamiliar to students of French-oriented 19th-century painting. An attractive book on an aspect of art history not previously explored in English, this is recommended for scholarly art libraries. Hara Seltzer, NYPL
