It’s almost summer vacation and most teachers are throwing parties for their students. But not Miss Irma Birmbaum. She’s the toughest teacher in town. Who else would give homework for the last day of school?
The assignment is to be prepared for a surprise. Miss Birmbaum is secretly planning a party, but she has a cooking accident as she’s making the treats and suddenly begins to shrink. With lots of help from the students Miss Birmbaum finally returns to her usual size, and they all have the best end-of-school party ever.

Lisa Passen graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York and has written and illustrated several books for children. She couldn't resist bringing back Miss Irma Birmbaum, the toughest teacher in town, for another mysterious adventure. Ms. Passen lives on Long Island, New York with her husband Bruce, daughter Rubi, Shih Tzu Gino, pretty-boy tomcat Robbie, ferret Dweezil, a hamster, a fat-tailed African gecko, four combative finches, and fish. From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3-"The toughest teacher in town," from Attack of the 50-Foot Teacher (Holt, 2000), returns. This time Miss Birmbaum is making her students work the day before the last day of school. She stays late to decorate the classroom and prepare treats for a surprise celebration. A party game is "pin the verb on the noun" and treats are prune pudding, kidney bean cookies, and brussels sprout juice. In the cafeteria kitchen, Miss Birmbaum falls into her treats and discovers she is shrinking. After spending the night running on the pet hamster's exercise wheel, she escapes when the animal falls asleep. Students find her stuck on top of a cupcake that has fallen out of a child's lunch bag. She returns to normal size after eating a lick of chocolate icing, and then orders pizza and cake for the party. It is a bit far-fetched to believe that her shrinking experience made this out-of-touch adult know "what it's like to be little!" but it won't bother children. The boldly colorful and comical watercolor illustrations will draw giggles all around as the humorless woman gets her comeuppance.
