TOBY WIDDICOMBE is an associate professor in the Department of English at the University of Alaska Anchorage. His interests include American literature and culture, detective fiction, utopianism, and the literature of war. He has written books on Edward Bellamy and on American culture in the 1830s, and his articles have appeared in such journals asEnglish Language Notes, American Transcendental Quarterly, Utopian Studies, andEmerson Society Quarterly.
