In 1720 three men set out from Northamptonshire for Genoa. They are the young aristocrat Lord Stilwell, his valet Thomas Noon, and his tutor Lucius Jelborne. It quickly becomes apparent to Noon that they are not solely in Italy for his master's education - something strange is being sent back to England in the paintings and treasures they accumulate, and it may be connected to the recent succession to the English throne of the Protestant King George I. When Stilwell is murdered Noon begins to uncover a Europe-wide conspiracy to replace the new king with a Catholic, and then he meets a beautiful woman who destroys his resolve to act...
