From a mind-blowing new talent, an audacious novel that imagines the world after God descends to Earth as a Dinka woman from the Sudan and subsequently dies in the Darfur desert. The result is a world both bizarrely new yet eerily familiar. In Currie s provocative, wise, and emotionally resonant novel we meet God himself; the Dinka woman whose mortality He must suffer when He inhabits her body; people all over the world coping with the devastating news of God's demise; a group of young men who, fearing the end of the world, take fate into their own hands; mental patients who insist that a god still exists; armies taking up the eternal war between fate and free will; and parents who, in the absence of a deity and the lack of anything to do on Sundays, worship their children. On the surface, this world utterly transformed-yet certain things remain unchanged: protective parents clash with willful, idealistic teenagers; idols are exalted; small town rumor mills run unabated; and children often don t realize how to forgive their parents until it s too late. In God Is Dead, Currie brings together a prescient satirical gift worthy of Jonathan Swift, the raw appeal of Chuck Palahniuk's blackest comedy, and the thought-provoking ethical questions of Kurt Vonnegut, all with a light touch, empathy, and wisdom that make for an exhilarating reading experience. Off beat yet accessible, God Is Dead is an exciting debut from a fresh new voice in contemporary fiction.

Ron Currie, Jr.'s prizewinning fiction has appeared in Glimmer Train. He has been short-listed for the Fish International Short Story Award and Swink magazine s Emerging Writer Award. He lives in Waterville, Maine. From AudioFile:
This blackly humorous group of linked short stories begins with God, incarnated as an African woman, dying in the Sudan. She/he is eaten by dogs that can then communicate telepathically, so that the news gets out. The world goes to pot, then recovers, but never fully. Gabriel Barons voice is not naturally strong or engaging, but he uses it skillfully. His reading is expressive, accurate, and well paced, and he modulates his tone well to indicate different characters. But his capable performance cant quite compensate for the sometimes tedious, farfetched satire, which only strikes fire occasionally. Listening to this book is probably better than reading it, but its still not quite enjoyable. W.M. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Descrizione libro Pan Macmillan. Hardback. Condizione libro: new. BRAND NEW, God is Dead, Ron Currie, God - or Sora, as she's called - has come to earth to experience its conflicts first hand, but adopting a human form also means assuming human frailty and mortality, and when Sora's death - and her true identity - is discovered, the world is immediately and irrevocably changed. Waves of panic, civil unrest and mass suicide sweep the globe; young men take the future into their own hands, armies go to war over fate versus free will, and parents - in the absence of an alternative, and with nothing else to do on a Sunday - turn their children into objects of worship. On the surface, this is a world that is utterly transformed. Yet as protective parents clash with wilful teenagers, seemingly mis-matched couples conduct clandestine affairs, and small-town gossips thrive on rumour and innuendo, certain things remain unchanged. In fact, perhaps the biggest surprise for those who survive the initial shock is that - even without God - life goes on. In "God is Dead", Ron Currie combines the satirical prescience of Jonathan Swift, the dark appeal of Chuck Palaniuk and the provocative enquiry of Kurt Vonnegut. At the same time, "God is Dead" is truly - and terrifyingly - original; blasphemous and heretical, it's an exceptional debut and a remarkable read. Codice libro della libreria B9780330452878
