Sinossi

Excerpt from Modern German Reader, Vol. 1: A Graduated Collection of Prose Extracts From Modern German Writers; With English Notes, a Grammatical Appendix and a Complete Vocabulary

IN preparing the present volume, which forms the First Part of my Modern German Reader,' I have been guided by two principles. The first is, that the Reading Book should be used from the first day of instruction. It is now generally admitted that the method which requires a full knowledge of Grammar, or at least of the accidence of the particular language, before proceeding to a 'construing book,' not only forms an impediment to the speedy and practical acquisition of languages, but is also apt to impart to the Pupils a distaste for the foreign idiom, before they have got any insight into its structure and spirit. Theory and practice must go hand in hand; and it is through this combination alone that the language becomes interesting and alive, as it were, or to speak with Friedrich Jakobs, 'the dry skeleton of paradigms assumes shape and body.'

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book examines how modern German literature and poetry have been influenced by the nature of German culture and language. The author introduces the reader to the works of Goethe, Schiller, and Lessing and how their works reflected the social and political climate at the time. It then explores the Romantic period of German literature where the author discusses the works of Brothers Grimm, Novalis, and E.T.A. Hoffmann, as well as their contributions to the German language. Later works by Heine and Büchner are examined to show how the German language reflected the political upheaval of the 19th century. This book is an insightful look at the history of the German language and its literature, discussing the works of its most notable authors and poets, and is essential reading for anyone interested in German history, language, or culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
