The selection in this volume is in Latin and originates from the archive of Malmesbury Abbey with which the High Medieval scholar William of Malmesbury was associated. It is largely concerned with the land owned by the Abbey across the county of Wiltshire and the surrounding areas, and highlights the complexity of social life in high medieval England, discussing the relationship between the Abbey and its tenants, the Crown and the wider Church. The introduction to this volume, a collaboration between the late J.S. Brewer and C. Trice Martin, discusses in detail the social history and economy of the Abbey.
