Descrizione libro Macdonald, 1979. Hardcover. Condizione libro: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st. H/B 169 pages, condition is very good, some edge wear and small tears to the DJ. The teaching of the Buddha, who lived in the fifth century BC, has been presented under different aspects in the course of the ages The aspect illustrated here is the most recent in rime, and reached Japan at the beginning of the ninth century. For it was in 806 AD that the monk Kukai brought esoteric Buddhism back from T'ang China and founded the Shingon School. It should be remembered that in 845 AD Buddhism was proscribed in China, and that in India its last phase, regarded as its culmination, was becoming indistinct and merging into Hinduism. Thus for eleven centuries from 845 until the present day the Japanese, together with the Tibetans, were the only people to practise the initiatory rites of Tantric Buddhism. Like the Tibetans, who were isolated from the rest of the world by the Himalayas, the Japanese, protected by the sea from invasion, were able to preserve intact the late and therefore most developed forms of Indian Buddhism. The West is only just beginning to discover the cultural riches which accumulated over the years in Japan, making it a living museum of Asia. The popularity of Zen has up till now caused Tantrism to be neglected, though it played an essential part in the development of the plastic arts. While there are some dozen Schools of Buddhism in Japan, the Shingon School is the only one which relies on visual aids to communicate its teaching. On his return from China the monk Kukai declared: The teachings of esoteric Buddhism are so profound that they defy any written expression; they can be revealed only through paintings. So it is not surprising that of all the Buddhist sects the Shingon School should possess by far the richest and most varied iconography. Paradoxically, this iconography. which expresses in the form of deities and/or symbols what cannot be transcribed in words, is contained in its entirety in two stereotyped paintings, the Diamond Mandala and the Womb Mandala. They act as bases and aids to the initiatory rituals and transmit the teaching of the Secret Buddha. Through the mandalas, Western readers may come to understand the fundamental meaning of the symbolical figures found in Shingon architecture, sculpture, painting and ritual. The book illustrates works which are for the most part unpublished, often kept hidden from the eyes of the profane, and always difficult of access. The first section traces the history of the Eight Patriarchs of the Propagation of Doctrine through the Way of the Mandalas. The second section presents the various elements in the ritual magic performed in order to attain Enlightenment. The third section, forming the second half of the book, is entirely devoted to the deciphering of Tantrism's abundant iconography. A study of the figures, gestures, attributes and symbolical colouring of some forty esoteric deities initiates the reader into one of the areas of Far Eastern art hitherto restricted to specialists. Here he will discover that an art which has been entirely codified and which never aimed at pleasing may yet inspire a profound aesthetic emotion. Codice libro della libreria 061409

Descrizione libro Macmillan, London, 1979. Cloth. Condizione libro: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. First Thus. A joint publication with Skira - Geneva. 170 pages including bibliography and glossary/index. 258 illustrations of which 36 are in colour. A sumptuous production which suffers from a manufacturing fault. The re-inforcing of the back hinge has been missed so that the weight of the contents is taken on the endpapers which have failed in part. A neat repair has been attempted by gluing the spine to the sewn and glued edges of the pages, but the insertion of proper tapes would be an improvement. This has not affected the text and illustrations at all, and the integrity of the contents is not compromised. The jacket is slightly rubbed and creased and, as often with a large, heavy book, has become rather loose. A beautiful book which, with careful handling, should be a joy to read. Size: 10½" x 13½" (265mm x 345mm). Codice libro della libreria 001417
