In the 1860s there was little medicine could do to cure or prevent illness; by the end of the 20th century, most people anticipated living to old age and popular expectations of what medicine could deliver became a problem for the medical profession. Hardy describes the British people's changing experience of health problems and the impact of medicine on a modernizing industrial society.
