What is distinctively Christian about the Church of England, and what does commitment to it entail?
Monica Furlong is a practising Anglican who feels a strong affection for the Church of England, but is not uncritical of its weaknesses. She thinks there are internal problems which need resolving - power and party struggles within the Church, sexual narrow-mindedness, unadmitted gender and racial prejudice, the tendency to regard 'marketing' and 'managing' as an answer to numerical failure, and an unwillingness to be candid about the extent of the decline or examine its meaning in depth. This gives the book a critical edge which makes for absorbing reading.
