This is a consideration of America's role in one of the most bitter conflicts of the 20th century. The author has written an account of the war and examines both the American and Vietnamese viewpoints, seeking to explain decisions and errors of both sides. It hopes to encourage students to challenge themes, concepts and issues contained within this period of history.

Vivienne Sanders has written extensively and successfully on American history in the Access to History series. She taught A Level History for over 30 years, mostly in independent schools, and is now retired.
