In the Famous Five books, the explicit message is that boys lead and girls follow, but the implicit one is that the only character who matters is George - a girl. It is George, not Julian or Dick, who is the 'hero' of the series and the one everyone remembers. (Enid Blyton and the School Story by Rosemary Auchm)
