This profusely illustrated guide to silver is as much for the reader with a broad interest in the decorative arts and their historical background as for the serious collector. Written by a team of experts, each with an international reputation in his or her specialist area, the book tells the story of the artistic evolution of silver from the earliest times to the present, in both Europe and North . America. It traces the various stylistic changes in the working of the metal that accompanied movements in the. other arts, and the origins of different types of piece, both secular and ecclesiastical, describing the social and cultural circumstances that produced them and how influences spread , from one country to another. From being almost exclusively limited to church use in the Middle Ages, silver wares gradually appeared in a domestic environment, first on the tables of the Renaissance nobility, and then more widely until Victorian times when they were an essential item in the display cabinets of the middle classes. After a brief attempt to mass-produce silverware by machine, the metal is once again being formed into, luxury items by hand. The contribution of individual artists and workshops is also documented, and since the skills of the silversmith are identical to those of the goldsmith and the same person worked in both metals, items of gold are also included in this survey, especially in the chapters on Roman and medieval times, from which more fine objects in gold than silver have survived.
