Sinossi

Excerpt from Ignition Probabilities of Wildland Fuels Based on Simulated Lightning Discharges

Fine fuel samples from Northwestern forest areas were subjected to an electric arc discharge that simulated the lightning continuing current. The important fuel state para meters and the ignition probabilities were determined using logistic regression.

The ignition probabilities for duff from short-needled coni fer species were found to depend almost entirely on the depth of the fuel bed. In the case of litter and duff from long needled species, ignition probabilities depend mostly on the ovendry fuel moisture.

Ignition probabilities also depend on the duration of the are only, with current flow and diameter having no detectable effect. Because the continuing current durations can be fit well by a Weibull distribution for both positive and negative discharges to ground, the probabilities conditional on the current duration can be converted to marginal probabilities per discharge. The necessary integrations were done and the results are presented.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the probability of a lightning discharge igniting various types of wildland fuels. The author, an accomplished scientist, combined simulated lightning discharges in a laboratory setting with statistical analysis to produce mathematical models that predict ignition probabilities. These models account for fuel parameters such as depth, moisture content, bulk density, and mineral content, as well as the duration of the lightning's continuing current. The findings provide valuable insights for fire management, enabling professionals to better assess the risk of lightning-caused fires and implement appropriate prevention and suppression strategies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Codice articolo 9780365541486_0
