The action was brought against the Mortgage Bank's directors, management and certain other specified individuals who were considered to have played a significant role in its financial ruin. These individuals were alleged to have failed in their fiduciary duties, particularly in relation to the bank's extensive discounting of promissory notes. The book presents an analysis of the resulting legal proceedings, bringing to light the internal workings of the Mortgage Bank, with a particular emphasis on the role played by its key figures, and the regulatory framework governing its operation. This case study thereby offers a broader examination of corporate governance and liability in banking and finance during the late 19th century in Switzerland.
