Descrizione libro Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition, published in 1971 - preceded by the first American edition, published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, NY in 1970. Please note this is an ex-library copy. ***Very good in green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp - lower corner of front board just slightly creased. Top edge of page block slightly marked. Internally also very good, but with the following library marks: Lincolnshire Library Service lending sheet on the front free endpaper along with barcode to front pastedown, library stamp to the half-title and printer's pages, and a sticker on the rear pastedown. No other obvious library marks - interior pages nice and clean, with no inscriptions. No reading lean. Spine tight. ***In a near fine printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £1.40 net. The dustwrapper is just slightly rubbed at the extremities, but has no chips, creases or tears. Back panel of dustwrapper nice and clean. Dustwrapper bright. ***205mm x 135mm. 136 printed pages. ***'Jerzy Kosinski has written a modern parable, which is also a suspense story. It is remarkable for its tension, wit and irony'. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***Jerzy Kosi?ski (born Józef Lewinkopf) (June 14, 1933 - May 3, 1991) was a Polish-American novelist and two-time president of the American Chapter of P.E.N., who wrote primarily in English. Born in Poland, he survived World War II and, as a young man, emigrated to the U.S., where he became a citizen. He was known for various novels, among them "Being There" (1971) and "The Painted Bird" (1965), which were adapted as films in 1979 and 2019 respectively. Kosi?ski's novels have appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list, and have been translated into over 30 languages, with total sales estimated at 70 million in 1991. One of Kosi?ski's more significant works is "Being There" (1971), a satirical view of the absurd reality of America's media culture. It is the story of Chance the gardener, a man with few distinctive qualities who emerges from nowhere and suddenly becomes the heir to the throne of a Wall Street tycoon and a presidential policy adviser. His simple and straightforward responses to popular concerns are praised as visionary despite the fact that no one actually understands what he is really saying. Many questions surround his mysterious origins, and filling in the blanks in his background proves impossible. The novel was made into a 1979 movie directed by Hal Ashby, and starring Peter Sellers, who was nominated for an Academy Award for the role, and Melvyn Douglas, who won the award for Best Supporting Actor. The screenplay was co-written by award-winning screenwriter Robert C. Jones and Kosi?ski.' (Wiki) ***The first UK edition of Jerzy Kosi?ski's "Being There". A very clean ex-library copy. The UK edition is far more uncommon than the American. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Codice articolo 8710
