Kindergarten-Grade 1-- Ravi's old bike is discarded when the garage is cleaned, only to be rescued by a tramp passing by the dump. The bike is then appropriated by a runner seeking advantage in a race, a poacher, two people on their way home from a party, and finally by a woman out shopping who parks the bike outside Joe's Junk Shop. When Ravi and his mother see the cleaned and painted bike in the front of the shop, they buy it immediately. The messages of this slim book are mixed. The implication is that "dirty and rusty" items are not useful or desirable unless they have been restored by someone else. It is further implied that it is completely acceptable to simply take any bicycle that one comes upon, even for the purpose of stealing or cheating in a race. Description and dialogue are spare, and easily accessible to beginning readers. The watercolor illustrations are richly saturated with vivid hues, but the figures, outlined heavily in black, are uncomfortably static. --Starr LaTronica, North Berkeley Library, Calif.
